Irma Nioradze, a prima ballerina with the Kirov ballet in St Petersburg, decided to organize an International Gala on Saturday 29 June 2019 – right in the heart of Cannes’ summer season.
The exceptional Viva Maïa gala aims to keep alive the memory of the great Maïa Plissetsskaä, the "Prima ballerina assoluta" who died in May 2015 after a fabulous and exemplary career lasting 50 years. In 2016, a first tribute was paid to her with the creation of Prix Maïa awarded in Cannes.
This year, the tribute to Maya Plissetkaya will take the form of an event bringing together some of the greatest dancers on the international stage who continue the spirit of this great ballerina by combining the most remarkable technique with dramatic expression. Leading companies will be represented, such as the Mariinsky, the Boshoi, the Vienna State Opera and the Munich National Theatre.
In total, some fifteen stars from around the world will gather for a program including the greatest moments in the repertoire - Don Quixote, Diana and Actaeon, Notre-Dame de Paris - alongside more specifically Russian ballets.
A land of dance par excellence thanks to its international dance school created by Rosella Hightower and the International Dance Festival, Cannes reaffirms its commitment to this major art by placing the "Viva Maïa" gala at the heart of its summer season, once again ensuring dance shines on the famous La Croisette!
