Misha KATZ: Conductor

Jean-Philippe COLLARD: Piano

The Orchestre Symphonique de l’Opéra de Toulon has established itself as one of the best orchestras in the Mozart repertoire and is known for the precision of its interpretations characterized by dynamism free of any stylistic excesses. It will perform in Cannes under the baton of the Festival's Artistic Director, accompanied by one of the most iconic French pianists. It shines in a program that sparkles with good humour: after the flamboyant "Theatre Director" overture with an eminently classical structure, it then accompanies an inspired soloist breathing life into a "Concerto No. 3" with pre-romantic accents. Jean-Philippe Collard is testimony to the ability of the greatest performers to constantly evolve with a delightful balance of sobriety, liveliness and power which highlights all the chromatic intensity of the score. His artifice-free virtuosity is not showy but gives coherence to the music and nourishes the dialogue with the orchestra. Together the orchestra’s musicians excel in highlighting the tonal clarity and structural finesse of extracts from the sensory kaleidoscope of Mendelssohn's masterpiece and Prokofiev's "Classical Symphony".

Expert advice
MISHA KATZ

Even in the artistic sphere, and when you have the job and passion to program a festival like Les Nuits Musicales du Suquet, you can’t be impervious to the general mood and tensions in the world around you: so I set the tone of this 2019 program in part as a reaction to the ambient unease and anxiety of everyday life for many people. I wanted a festive event that would act as an antidote!

Emblematic scores, a romantic and emotionally charged feel; vivid, light, haunting compositions that speak to many people’s melodic unconscious. And then the performers: I wanted to invite remarkable artists, pure talent of course, but also outstanding, endearing and charismatic personalities able to play and share emotion; artists with a communicative originality, well-known and rising young talents, able to break through the classic boundaries and enrich other musical sensibilities. Here are some of the ingredients in this 2019 festival, which has been deliberately concocted as an optimistic potion. So, let there be light and... hold the joy!
